What is purified terephthalic acid? What are the uses of purified terephthalic acid?

2024-09-30

Pure terephthalic acid is an organic raw material that is widely used in chemical production, light industry, electronics, construction and other fields. So, do you know about purified terephthalic acid?

PTA, or purified terephthalic acid, is a toxic and flammable white crystal. If mixed with air, it will burn and explode when it encounters a flame within a certain range. Its minimum combustion temperature is 680℃, its ignition point is 384~421℃, its sublimation temperature is 98.4 kJ/mol, its combustion heat is 3225.9 kJ/mol, and its density is 1.55 g/cm3. It dissolves in alkaline solutions, is slightly soluble in ethanol, and is insoluble in water, ether, glacial acetic acid and chloroform.

Uses of purified terephthalic acid:

PTA is also widely used worldwide. At present, PTA is mainly used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (referred to as polyester, PET).

Polyester includes polyester fiber, bottle chips, etc. At present, more than 75% of PTA in my country is used to make polyester fiber; 20% of PTA is used to make bottle-grade polyester, which is mainly used for packaging of various beverages, especially carbonated beverages such as soda; 5% of PTA is used to make film-grade polyester, which is mainly used for packaging materials, tapes and films. It can be seen that polyester fiber is an important part of PTA downstream extended products. In addition, it can also be used to make engineering polyester, or plasticizers and dye intermediates.

Polyester fiber, also known as polyester. It is a synthetic fiber in chemical fiber. In the chemical fiber industry, in addition to polyester fiber, there are acrylic fiber, nylon and spandex. Polyester fiber can be made into special products such as bulletproof vests, seat belts, tire cords, insulation materials, etc. But its main application area is textile materials. Among my country's textile raw materials, more than 90% are cotton and chemical fibers.
